Craft Supplies - What all crafters should have on hand

craft-supplies.jpgThere are many outlets for obtaining craft supplies. Local crafting stores, online stores, crafting books, and even stores like Wal-Mart and Target. If you are an avid crafter, or just want to get started crafting, what craft supplies should you have on hand?

I enjoy doing projects, when I have the time, and always try to have the necessary craft supplies at my disposal. It is frustrating when you want to do a project and don’t have everything you need readily available. Following are my recommendations of the craft supplies everyone should have handy.

  • Scissors – Keep scissors of all shapes and sizes, including the decorative scissors that can make scalloped, jagged, and other fancy edges.
  • Glue of all kinds – glue sticks, crafting glue, adhesive glue, glue gun and glue guns sticks. I often pull out my glue gun for things other than crafts because it’s simple and easy to use. Glue sticks are a must if you have kids who want to do projects.
  • Paper – you should always have some card stock available in case you need to make a quick card. It’s also wise to keep plenty of paper on hand for children to use. You can buy packs of all sizes, shapes, and colors of paper that can be used for making cards, scrapbooking, name tags, gift tags, and much more.
  • Pens, markers, and colored pencils – these are especially important if you specifically want to make cards. They are also important if you like to stamp.
  • Acrylic paints and paint brushes – I use acrylic paints for many projects and is one of the essential craft supplies at my house. Usually for Easter or Mother’s Day I’ll pull out the paints and have my kids paint something or put their hand prints on something using paints. You should have several colors on hand.

Other craft supplies that you may want to have available are ribbons and yarn, buttons, beads, Velcro strips, magnetic stripping, crafting wire, and fabric paints. Once you have the basics, you can keep adding to what you have. As a Sunday school teacher, I am always delving into my craft supplies looking for what I need for projects, and most of the time I need things that I have listed above.

If you are looking for craft supplies for art projects or for a specific hobby, such as stamping, you can find what you need from companies such as Stamp It Up, who specialize in stamping products and kits, as well as at local crafting stores. Try shopping online as well, as there are many online craft supplies out there.

Whatever your crafting needs are, it is easy to find the essentials and the other things you need to help you get started. Crafting is a fun hobby—be creative and have fun!
